A new children’s center is set up at Sheikhan Camp. Similar to the Hevi Center (Hevi = Hope) in the Essian Camp near Baadre, this one is also for children who grow up in the refugee camps. While the Hevi Center gives elementary school children space to play and a supplementary educational offer, the Pave Center is a school for children who have fallen “through the cracks” and have no opportunity to get an education elsewhere. Many of the children and adolescents were either born in the camp, were kidnapped as children by the Islamic State or have witnessed kidnapping and death in their immediate family environment.
Studies in the camps show that many young people are not yet able to read, write or do math. Observations also show that the young people who were kidnapped as children have great fears, insecurity and unease. Many have no hope for their future because of their situation. It is precisely these children and young people that we want to reach. We were able to take over some facilities from another organization.
A team of teachers has been formed, some of whom are still undergoing training or further training. Similar to the Hevicenter, the Montessori method is used. The children learn in a playful way, discover their potential and their passion and express it. This should make it easier for them to find their place in society later on.
We want to help them develop healthy behaviors and lifestyles and strengthen their confidence and self-esteem. In the first step, the children receive a “primary school education” with a degree. Our team is currently working on a second course to teach craft skills. This video gives you a brief introduction.
